This is a fascinating look at Project Orion : what might have been, and may never be…
To Mars By A-Bomb
Here’s what it would have looked like if they had been allowed to go ahead:
NASA is claiming that they want to send men to the moon and Mars lately (by 2020!), what they don’t advertise is that they’ve been taking apart the old Saturn V launch vehicle in Alabama to try to figure out how it was done….there is no one left intellectully capable of figuring it out anymore, it seems the original engineers are all dead, and the new generation of engineer equipped with the most up to date computers (the moon launches were calculated on slide rules) and new fangled space age materials, still can’t conceive of how they solved the various problems of getting men and equipment beyond low Earth orbit and to the moon. I hope you enjoyed the videos and were inspired by the greatness and awesome power of the possibilities open to 1950’s America, because 21st century us will never see the like in our lifetimes.
We are not anymore what they once were.
