Teaching Your Child the Alphabet

One easy method to help you teach your children the alphabet is to sing the alphabet song to them throughout the day. Eventually, your child will begin to sing along.
But remember that even if your children can sing the alphabet song forwards and even backwards, that doesn’t mean they have learned the alphabet. However, this song is an excellent building block in the teaching process.
Once your child knows how to sing the alphabet song, you will need to teach your child to identify the letters. One good way to teach your child the alphabet is to find a subject that interests your child, whether you use dinosaurs, puppies, or trucks, you will probably be able to find an ABC book on that topic. Your child will be more likely to maintain interest if it’s a topic that is of
interest. Be sure to read the book through several times with your child, then be sure the book is accessible throughout the day so that your child can pick it up and review the ABC’s whenever they feel an interest.
If your child has little interest in books, try making an alphabet guide to teach your child the alphabet.
Print each of the alphabet letters clearly on an index card, then tape each letter to a corresponding item in the house that represents that letter.
Your children will see that “c” stands for chair or that “t” stands for television every time they walk by an index card.
Please remember that this is a delicate time in your child’s education, and if there is undue stress placed on learning to read, it may give them an aversion to the whole thing that may well last through their school years.
