An 18-month-old girl in Ho Chi Minh City is clinically dead and on life-support after her preschool teacher allegedly put adhesive tape over her mouth Monday.

Do Ngoc Bao Tran is in the city’s Pediatric Hospital 1 where doctors said that they were yet to find out the cause and that she was showing no signs of improvement.

Le Thi Le Vy, who taught at Thien Tho Private Preschool, confessed that she did it to stop Tran from crying.

Police Senior Lieutenant Colonel Vo Hoang Nghia said Vy faced a charge of “unintentionally causing injury”.

If Tran died, the police would file for “unintentionally causing someone’s death due to violation of professional or administrative regulations”, he added. This carries a jail term of up to 12 years.

Vy told the police that Tran had cried loudly after her mother, a teacher in the same school, left and to stop it she had taped her mouth shut.

A little later, her colleague, Nguyen Thi Hong Ha, realized that the child had turned pale and stopped breathing.

Vy, who was in charge of children aged 12 to 18 months, has studied up to 11th grade and is not trained for this job.

The two have since been suspended from their job and the police are investigating.

Thien Tho Private Preschool, which opened in 2005, has around 40 children aged 13 months to four years
