Reasons to Call the Doctor

A baby is incapable of communicating to us verbally when there is something physically wrong, or when they feel ill, so its important to recognize the signs of illnes or injury serious enough to seek professional medical help. I’ve compiled a list of the most important things to watch out for, when you will know you have to call the doctor;

  • The first occurrence of any illness new to the baby, even a cold.
  • Diarrhea, when bowel movements are more watery and more frequent than usual.
  • Blood tinged urine or bowel movements.
  • Poor feeding, when the baby stops the usual vigorous suckingduring feedings.
  • Unusual crying that continues, or a hoarse cry.
  • A sgnificant change in the baby’s color, breathing, behavior, or activity.
  • A rectal temperature of 101 degrees or higher.
  • A listless, inactve attitude when the baby is usually active and alert, or drowsiness at an unusual time.
  • Convulsions, or periods when your child stiffens or twitches uncontrollably.
  • Ear pain, draining ears. The child may pull repeatedly on the ear, or cry when coughing.
  • Projectile vomiting, insted of spitting up.
  • An unusual or widespread rash.
  • Any discharge or redness in the baby’s eyes.
  • Any injury whatsoever from which any pain or disability does not disappear within 15 minutes.
