Saving Your Child From Accidental Poisoning
![]()
The most common causes of poisoning in children six and under are, in order; drugs, plants, personal care products, and household cleaners.
Children should be supervised especially carefully before meal times (They are more likely to sample foreign substances when they’re hungry).
Teach your child early to say “ahhhh”, you could get the chance to catch something that shouldn’t be in there and remove it before damage is done.
Careful parents will keep the number to the local poison control center within easy reach of every phone in the house and programmed into their cell phones.
An absolute must in every household with children is a bottle of ipecac syrup (easily available at any pharmacy over the counter) to induce vomiting if so directed by poison control or a medical professional. Make sure to pack a bottle with you when you travel with your little ones.
