Preschoolers and The Death of a Pet
It is very important to let your child understand that death is a normal part of life. This can be a traumatic event for some children and your preschooler needs to know that every living being, pets or people, will get old or sick and eventually die, it is just a part of life. We do not like it, but it isn’t something that scares or panics Mommy and Daddy. It’s simply “the way life is.” Your child needs to know he or she is with a confident parent who can handle this. Your child will emulate your strength.
It’s normal to feel sad. Explain to your child that you understand how much he or she misses the pet, and that you’re sad, too, and that crying is OK.
Help your preschooler remember what he or she loved most about the pet. Reminiscing helps a child create a happy memory about the relationship with his or her pet. It will help immensely in getting your child through the grieving process.
Get back into the daily routine. Grief is not permanent, but a phase. A Preschooler will normally not be sad for very long and will be ready to get busy with regular activities and socialising.
Then you may even consider, after a suitable period of time, since it is very important to teach that living things are not replaceable like objects, getting a new pet.

My folks handled it this way when my pet guinea pig died (I was 5), it was really rough but they explained that he was old and it was natural, and we had good times together–it really did help.
