Important Pool Safety Tips To Remember

- Never, ever leave kids unattended. No matter how well young children can swim, they must always be supervised by an adult who knows CPR. During parties, adults can arrange to take turns at being the designated watcher.

- Use dual layers of protection around the pool; a fenced-in yard is not enough protection; backyard pools need to be surrounded by secure fencing material of some kind, at least 4 feet high with no gaps and with childproof locks.

- If possible, use motorized pool covers when the pool is not in use. Motorized pool covers that close over the pool after each use will provide an extra protective barrier. The cover should be strong enough to hold the weight of two adults and a child in case of an emergency.

- Always remove toys from pool after use. Do not leave kiddie pool toys in the pool after using, as this is too much of a temptation for a child to resist sometimes.

- Insure you have rescue equipment by the pool area. Have a life preserver, shepherd’s hook and working telephone poolside in case of an emergency.

- Don’t rely on air-filled swimming aids. These are not approved life vests and have been known to burst or leak.

- Teach children how to swim at a young age, this is the most important gift you can give your young child, and it wil serve them the rest of their lives.

- Make sure your neighbor’s pool is safe. Children who are going to a friend’s or neighbor’s pool should make sure the neighbors are following safety guidelines.

- Seriously consider installing a pool alarm. They notify a homeowner if someone or something has fallen into the pool.

Keep these important safety tips in mind and have a fun and safe summer of pool fun!
