How to: Get invited to a neighbour’s pool

Under no circumstances should this act involve a crow bar or fence hopping. Instead, snag an invite by applying simple social psychology. Be honest, friendly and make them feel important
– an easy task considering they have a pool and you don’t. Make them understand how priceless a little swim would be. But don’t beg. While you’re there, lay the groundwork for a repeat visit by building a relationship. Compliment them, use their name often. Engage them in positive conversation. Never criticize–even if the pool is smaller than you thought, it’s still bigger than yours. Once the hook is set, reel them in.
Disassociate your friendliness from the act of swimming by stopping by just to thank them. Take a gift or invite them over some time. It makes people feel good. Soon, they’ll want the relationship to continue as much as you do. Once you’re swimming on a weekly basis, drop the act.
