Health Insurance and the Self Employed Parent

Lets face it, when we were young and single, health insurance was something we put way back on the list of other important stuff; clubbing, clothes, shoes, travel, and other of life’s needful things. We get older, married, have a child (or two), and suddenly we are obsessed with health coverage , the prenatal care and actual delivery of my youngest son was billed at a little over $10,000.00, quite a sizable nut to crack without coverage.
There are a variety of options for the self employed, including high deductible insurance policies also called catastrophic coverage, which will protect you financially from being ruined by a very expensive illness or accident. Then there’s small business coverage for those of us who lead a team of our own employees (with the added advantage that you will attract better talent when you offer coverage with employment), and of course there’s traditional insurance coverage.
Whichever option you go with health insurance is a fact of life the self-employed must grapple with head to head, to insure the security of their family’s and their own health needs, and insure that a serious illness or injury isn’t the end of the retirement fund.
