Dogs As Clever As Toddlers

Fido can solve the same problems as a baby
Scientists in Austria have found that dogs are on at least the same level of intelligence as a 14-month-old child. A team of researchers at the University of Vienna carried out a test where a mum entered the room her child was in. As she was carrying a blanket in her hands, she put the
light switch on with her head. The children were then asked to turn the light on, and most of them used their hands – having worked out that the only reason their mothers used their heads was because their hands were full.
The same test was carried out with the dogs – groups of dogs watched another dog turn the light on with its head, as its mouth was carrying a ball. Eighty per cent of the dogs used their mouths to turn the light on, as the dog couldn’t use its mouth because of the ball it was carrying.
‘We were very surprised,’ said University of Vienna researcher Friederike Range.
