Chasing kites, 4 kids mowed by trains
NEW DELHI: Kite-flying on Independence Day symbolises joy and freedom. But on Wednesday afternoon, the annual ritual turned into tragedy
when four adolescent boys were run over by two local trains while chasing fly-away kites close to the Seelampur railway station slum colony in east Delhi. All four died on the spot.
Eyewitnesses said the incident happened around 1.45 pm. The boys were running after kites on parallel tracks when two trains appeared almost simultaneously from opposite directions. ”One of the boys came under a train and was cut into two.
On seeing their friend die in this manner, the other three horrified boys ran in confusion and were run over as well,” Ahmed Hassan, an eyewitness, said.
Strangely, the bodies were yet to be identified from the GTB Hospital mortuary till late in the evening. Police said the boys, aged between 12 and 14, appeared to be locals but residents of the nearby slum cluster maintained that they were outsiders.
Slum dwellers from Ajit Nagar who had gathered at the spot said both trains involved in the tragedy were local, and one of them being bound for Ghaziabad.
