Beach Safety Tips For Parents
![]()
This summer, as you get the family prepared for a beach outing, there are a few important things to keep in mind.
Not every beach is crowded, they are wide open and a wandering off is very easy for the little ones, just a small number of people and a little distance can make you invisible to a child after 20 or 30 feet…
There is a gigantic piece of water in front of you that can cause big problems for little waders if you lose sight of them for even a second, if you haven’t done so yet, please consider getting swim classes/basic water safety for all your children. Drowning is incredibly common, and a lack of swimming skill the major cause.
For the little ones, put the child’s name and your cell phone number on one of the clothing lables, its the first place I check if I come across a lost child, and so will law enforcement, lifeguards, educators and other child care professionals.
Every year test the sunscreen you’ll be using on your child’s skin, children do develop sensitivities to some of the ingredients, my son caught a horrible rash from a brand we used very well the year before, now we simply get the hypoallergenic brands to avoid a repeat rash.
Establish guidelines before you get there, a landmark to wait at if you get lost, a landmark to show where you all are, an area to not wander past unsupervised. If you are bringing little children with you, stay near the lifeguard station, in case of an emergency help is just a shout away.
