A Proper Bedtime Snack
![]()
The best bedtime snacks are foods which are high in tryptophan and contain calcium along with healthy carbohydrates (fruits or whole grains).
The carbs and calcium will make the trptophan more effective. Sticky sugars (honey, caramel, syrup, raisins) should not be given at bedtime because the child will run a high risk of cavities, the sugar coats the teeth and sticks to any crevasses overnight, when the rinsing effect of saliva is much less than during the day.
Good Bedtime Snacks:
A glass of warm milk
Cheese and crackers
Bowl of cereal with fruit
Peanut Butter Sandwich
Yogurt with fruit or whole grain cereal

Eating nuts before bed causes people to have nightmares. Some people do not get this effect, but many do; therefore, innocent sounding peanut butter (and all nuts) should not be eaten before bed.
