We’ve been trying to get our kids to ride their bikes for about a year and a half. It hasn’t been a constant battle — we would try for a bit, then take a month off. Rinse. Repeat. It’s been tough, but that’s what makes today so rewarding. Today, we have success. All three kids riding: spinning around the driveway, hair waving in the wind, ear-to-ear smiles on their faces. Life is good.

It doesn’t take advanced knowledge of statistics to figure out that, if every parent thinks his or her children are above average, close to half of them are wrong. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to any parent that, despite their kids’ talking early or producing amazing art or asking questions you can’t answer or what-have-you, their kids are not necessarily gifted.

Questions about salary requirements are one of the very few questions guaranteed to come up during a job interview or screening process, as well as almost always cause some severe awkwardness on both sides. Once you’ve found a great job, how do you demand what you’re worth without sounding arrogant? What if you toss out a low number and lock yourself in at a loss, or shoot too high and scale yourself out of the running?
